Update on wombat Eve... The wombat rescued from Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra - we kept her for observation for 2 days and then found her a vacant burrow. This is what we call a hard release as she is wild (not hand raised) and do not require a soft release enclosure or a gradual return to the bush We do have to try and ensure her safety as far as possible though and this burrow has been monitored for a while. Yesterday was the second strangest place that Ive been notified of a wombat (strangest and most unlikely place was a few years ago with Sally in Braddon). But this wombat made herself comfy in a garage in Dickson (which is in the middle of Canberra and not near any known wombat populations). Just one street away from an insanely busy road next to the town centre. Luckily Bundy, as the home owner named her was unharmed, no mange but tired (young adult) so catching her was the easy part. Another wombat treated for mange early this morning. We suspect it’s Stu, a wombat treated once last year before he disappeared. One dose Bravecto is not enough so it’s starting from scratch again and hopefully we can give him two follow up doses.
