Appendix 1 from the Nut Kiln Chronicles… When I cleaned out the firebox of the nut kiln I found some interesting material. The grate was covered in nut ash as you might expect. What was a little surprising was the hardened layers of it. Some of the nut ash had fused together over the grate. I see this kind of slag in long wood firings and call it clinker. I’m not sure why exactly I call it that. I think because I started wood firing with gusto in North Carolina. Maybe it’s a southern term? Anywa
